I am forever perplexed when analysts are aghast at the high and mighty making ridiculous statements of this sort. Why are they so surprised I wonder. A large section of people accross the judiciary will espouse exactly the same sentiments. And so it goes for the police. The relationship between modernity and rape/molestation is so often made in the popular textualities, and everyday conversations, that one wonders about how to counter this. One thing is for sure. You cannot really think that the judiciary will be able to regulate this sphere.

The honourable Cyriac Joseph is a serial offender.

At the Asia Women Lawyer's Conference in Bangalore last year, the State Women's Commission Chairperson had demanded a gender audit of the judiciary. The honourable Joseph said that "there was no point in women trying to be men and do all that a man is expected to do." Cautioning women, he said, "Once you lose your womanhood, there is nothing left to be protected." Men have understood the "value and beauty" of womanhood, he said. "In the name of empowering women, we should not create a situation where they lose their womanhood. There is a difference between males and females," he said.

Sujata Manohar, retired Supreme Court judge, in response, assured Mr. Cyriac Joseph that "men do not appear to lose their manliness when they become judges, and so there is no reason why women would lose their womanliness."
