Cheshire,

I did not quite understand what you meant by "Why couldnt anybody speak about it 10 years ago?".
I presume you are referring to Keshpur incidents.
Keshpur was totally diferent from Nandigram. Even liberals like Partha Chattopadhyay of the Subaltern School, otherwise opposed to the authoritarian tendencies of the CPM, noticed the "class character " of the semi-Fascist terror unleashed by AITMC goons. The erstwhile landowners had united against beneficiaries of land reforms. The CPM was still a Party of the dispossesed those days.
Things have changed in last 10 years. In its eagerness to satisfy Urban Middle-class aspirations, the Party has gone overboard losing its essential class-character. Coupled with the same is their bureaucratic stranglehold in rural areas which proved to be extremely suffocating.
However, I still believe that it is the height of ideological bankruptcy to support crooks and knaves masquerading as Trinamoolis and Maoists as recent events stand testimony to.

This is a bold article. Even I have felt a strong discomfort about this type of violence escalating in W.Bengal and nobody speaking against it. I didn't support Nandigram, and its disheartening to see left intellectuals quite over this issue, as if its more pardonable. The Trinamool is another party of goons.

Thanks to Apoorvanand for "calling a spade a spade". The "liberals" stand exposed as they refuse to condemn recent Trinamool and Maoist violence, the kind of which we last saw betweeen 1972 and 1977. While I remain opposed to the CPM, am surprised that people like Aditya still harp on an incident which took place 2 years back while refusing to comment on recent happenings. Where are Medha Patkar , Mahasweta Devi, Subhaprasanna ,and the other "intellectuals" . The few genuinely democratic people who supported the AITMC and the Opposition in West Bengal should now realize what we have been saying all along - to replace the CPM a genuine Left, secular, democratic force has to be created - there are no shortcuts.
