I hope that we can also defend right of gay couples to adopt children and be recognized as a family in the eyes of the Constitution. Today I wrote a letter regarding the Madras High Court judgement ordering a company (Air India) to recognize the rights of the adopted child when conferring employee benefits. I am including the text of my letter and hope that the movement for gay rights as well as adoption rights can unite on this issue.

Dear Editor,

While appalled that AIR India would attempt to deny benefits to a family whose child was in the legal process of adoption, I am heartened to see that the Court has upheld the child’s legal rights. The 21 month long struggle of R. R. George Christopher and Kristy Chandra paves the way for other families seeking to adopt in consonance with the law along with their personal or religious traditions. Let it be etched into our social conscience and never again have to appear in the headlines that “adopted child is entitled to all legal rights.”
