The Last International: Occupy New York, Occupy the Night, Occupy Earth.

November 18, 2011

Facebook Found Image of the Occupation of Foley Square, New York

Sometimes just a few images, and a few facebook update texts tell you all you need to know.

New York, 18th November 2011, NYPD estimates say that approximately 36,000 people voted with their feet to take back their city, and their planet. Could this be the beginning of the end of Capitalism, at least as we know it?

Live Youtube Streaming Channel from New York, Nov 18 2011

This (above streaming channel – Ustream.tv) is an extraordinary streaming video testimony of what happened in New York today.

Suspended between longitudes and time zones, “I am guided by the beauty of our weapons”, I am waiting for the global articulation of a demand for a global living wage, for freedom of movement for labour, an end to wars, the depredations of states and corporations – and a step-by-step dismantling of the structures that need to be taken down.

Who could have known, that when two gentlemen – Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels – persuaded the Hague Congress of the First International (1872) to shift the General Council of the International to New York,  they were thinking (as always) way ahead of their times ?

Is it time for the Last International to announce itself ?

First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin ? And then … ?

There’s a suspiciously coordinated move to clear protestors from both Zucotti Park as well as St. Paul’s. (haven’t heard (yet) from other places) Public health & hygiene, ownership of parks, public order and other arguments have now started to come forward. It is at times like these that we must think of using the internet in an unambiguous way – how we here in India can show solidarity and demonstrate our suppor for the protestors.

The level of delusion displayed by the author of this article has motivated me to request whatever substance s/he is imbibing at this time, and is it easily available online?

You read and you read and you read, about despair and injustice, and feel something horrible inside while reading, which is the possibility that there is no hope.
So it is wonderful to see so much hope despite all the despair , in a small note such as this one. It both makes me wonder, how despair is the way we all articulate politics, and how very much more wonderful it would be if we could just hope and hope and hope instead. Thank you, for this, especially for those of us who surround ourselves in cynicism.
