What do the Maoists want?

February 23, 2011

The media has by and large focused on the Maoist demand of release of some of their own in exchange of the Malkangiri collector and junior engineer. The list of the total 8 of 14 demands of the Maoists that the Orissa government has agreed to makes for interesting reading:

(1) Orissa government will write to Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to take action on the extremists demand for release of Maoist central committee members Sheela di (jailed in Jharkhand) and Padma (in Chhattisgarh) owing to their ill-health; (2) ST status for the Konda Reddy and Nukadora communities categorized as OBCs; (3) stopping the multi-purpose Polavaram project of Andhra Pradesh; (4) ‘pattas’ (record of rights) to tribals dispossessed of their land in Malkangiri and Koraput; (5) irrigation in Maribada and Maniamkonda villages in Malkangiri; (6) compensation based on HC order to Tadangi Gangulu and Ratanu Sirika who died of disease allegedly due to torture; (7) relevant laws for mining operations in Mali and Deomali bauxite mines; (8) minimum displacement of tribals and adequate compensation. Thank you very much. If you hadn’t posted this i would have never known their needs. Also do you know what are the other 6 demands?

It’s kind of funny what people have to do to have their demands met.

Outrageous! How dare they ask for land rights and protection from displacement? And compensation for deaths due to torture! Will these barbarians stop at nothing?

Those six demands are very genuine demands. In fact, if the government had done its duty properly in Malkangiri and other backward areas than, may be the Naxals would not have an excuse to indulge in the things that they do.
Having said that, it seems you see what you want to see only.
Why have you left out the other six demands and the other extra demand that the naxals have come up with, even after the orissa government agreed to their first 14 demands, and the maoists and the mediators agreed to release the collector of Malkangiri.
What the Maoists really want are these six demands, the first eight demands were only sweet exteriors they had to put on a bitter pill,to sell to their constituency: the leftists, City liberals, the local sympathisers, Human rights groups and i think people like you.

Ashutosh, I don’t know what the other six demands are. I just posted the 8 I could find. I’m not saying he Maoists are great saints. If you can find the other six please post them here. And please spare us the rant about city liberals etc

Here are the extra demands; you can find it here
    1. Mediators should physically handover the agreement between the government and the Maoists
    2. The CPI (Maoist) had earlier demanded the release of Srinivas Sriramulu. Now the party has understood that there are other cases and complications with Srinivas’s release
    3. However, the mediators guarantee release of four people — Sirisha alias Padma, Eshwari, Roja Madangi alias Sarita, Andaluri Eswari, and Gokul Kuldipia who are 4. facing charges in the Semiliguda police station (case no.78) – along with that of Maoist sympathiser Ganti Prasadam
    5. Police officers should not be present when the Collector would be handed over
    6. Narayanpatna cases should be handed over to a special committee as soon as possible

The list of all the fourteen demands are here at

Sorry for the rant. But, sometimes, the Media which is represented by people like you and Kafila, seems to prefer the colour Red over Saffron. Remember Saffron is only one shade of Red only.

ok, thank you. i still don’t understand why or on what basis you’re accusing me or Kafila of being pro-Maoist

I am not accusing of you being Pro Maoists. Failing to present a case from both angles, as it has been done in this case, gives an impression to the reader that the Maoists are suppressed and oppressed people, they are fighting a selfless struggle on behalf of the poor. This benefits the Maoists in earning the sympathy of the public.
You knew from the beginning that there are 14 demands. Yet you post six, very harm less demands. You and Kafila have a huge readership, atleast that’s my beleif, as i have been reading Kafila for a long time. These Six demands in themselves shows the Maoists to be the champions of Tribals and poor.
I think, out of the 14 almost 11 are genuin demands. Analysing those 11 demands, it seems that the rest of the three are the actual demands. I can’t analyse those 11 demands here, it would be too long, I would need a blog to write about them. Just one example: they wanted the Polavaram project to be scraped; when all along they knew that this is a project of Andhra Govt and Orissa has been opposing it from the beginning. I don’t think the Maoists are fools to demands such things. They are out to fool people like us so that they can run their shop with the sympathy of the public.
You should have checked the facts before writing about them. You have written the post on 23rd Feb. The extra demand came on 22nd.

enough of this blame game!! we sit back in that comfort couch and speak volumes about ‘isms’ and ‘ations’! it is not about left, right or centre! it is about denial of basic human rights which we need to counter….let us unite against the oppressors and strenthen our conscience rather than widening the ideological rift by creating more ‘isms’ and ‘ations’……….

being a budding journalist what scares me is, i would have to be a part of that corrupt fourth pillar soon that is spreading the culture of indifference…..and discussing the ideals……
