The living room is one of the most important spaces within your home. It’s where you and your family come to unwind and connect after a long day. It’s a space to invite guests over for a holiday party or where you’ll cozy up for a movie on the couch on a rainy afternoon. You want this room to feel like the special space that it is.

Not sure where to start? It’s easy to get stumped, especially if you don’t have any prior interior design knowledge. But here’s the secret. You don’t need to have the interior design experience to redesign or decorate your home.
We’ve put together four creative ideas to improve your living room and make the most out of the space.
Move Everything Around
The first thing we always suggest is to start with what you have within the space. Sometimes all it takes is a little rearranging of your furniture to spruce up a room.
Choose a focal point in the room. This can be quite obvious to the eye, such as a fireplace with a mantel or a large window. Other times it may not be as prominent, which means you can create them yourself. These could be things like a wall-mounted television or a specific piece of furniture.
From there, try out different layouts for the room around your new focal point. You’ll want to consider the flow of traffic to and from the room, along with finding a proper balance with your furniture. There is a chance you may also have too much furniture for the space. In this case, it might be worth moving some pieces into another area within the house to minimize the congestion.
Create a Photo Gallery Wall
This is one of our favorites and is incredibly easy to do. A photo gallery wall adds a personal touch to your wall decor. You can find different ideas on Pinterest on how to arrange your photographs. One idea is to have a clean look by having all the same size and colored frames evenly hung on the wall in a grid format.
Another idea, if you are looking for something a little more eccentric, is to visit your local thrift store to find an array of different frames. Arrange them sporadically, but with purpose, along the wall. This can give a more vintage, rustic appeal within the living room.
Change Out The Pillows and Throw Blankets
Sometimes it can be as simple as changing out your pillows and blankets to add a splash of color. While these things might seem small, the added color can make a huge difference in the room’s overall aesthetic. This doesn’t just apply to color. You can also change the types of textures you use in your blankets and pillows, too.
Add a Little Lighting Into the Room
Lighting is key when setting the ambiance of the room but often times is a neglected part of the interior design. The use of floor lamps or side table lamps can go a long way in making improvements to your living room. The key thing to remember with the use of lighting is to ensure that you are utilizing levels.
Having light fixtures and sources placed at various levels or heights throughout the room improves the overall balance. This is similar to the arrangement of the furniture, as we mentioned earlier when choosing your focal point.
When we think about decorating or interior design, we tend to think it’s incredibly expensive to do. From these four creative ideas, you can easily see it doesn’t require a lot to make a significant difference in the appeal of your room. A little work can go a long way.
