The Different Types Of Welding

The process of welding involves heating two pieces of metal, such as steel plates, to the point that they melt and mix them together. Once cooled, they become a single piece of metal thanks to the irreversible bond that has been created through the welding process. Although there are a number of different processes, the most basic types of welding include, stick welding, flux-cored welding, TIG welding, and MIG welding. Depending on the different metals being welded together, the abilities of the welder, and the application, will impact the type of welding being used in any situation.

Stick welding

This is sometimes also referred to as shielded metal arc welding or SMAW for short and requires the use of both hands. It involved the use of a stick that is fully coated in flux. This melts under extreme heat to create not only gas but also a slag liquid that works to protect the weld from the process of oxidation. However, the slag that is leftover from this process does leave a bit of a mess that needs cleaning up via the use of a liquid solvent or a sanding machine.

Flux-cored welding

Flux-cored arc welding or FCAW for short sees a metallic tube with a flux agent inside of it used to produce a slag liquid. The melting process also produces a gas, which works to protect the weld itself from being contaminated. This is used in those situations where there is a strong wind, which might usually disperse any gas produced. However, it does create a large amount of spatter that does require cleaning up afterward.

TIG welding

TIG stands for tungsten inert gas and is a process that requires a certain level of skill from the welder, although it does allow for a greater level of precision. It is sometimes also referred to as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and is typically used for the purpose of welding certain alloys and aluminum to one another. The arc that is given off during the welding process produces a puddle of molten metal, which works to melt the filler rod.

MIG welding

This is the type of welding that welders learn at the very beginning of learning their craft. MIG stands for metal inert gas, but the process is also sometimes referred to as gas metal arc welding (GMAW). It is a form of welding that involves an electric arc and relies on there being a completed electric circuit. This travels through the two pieces of metal that are being welded together, as well as through a welding wire that is there to act as an electrode. This means that when the welding wire then touches one of the pieces of metal, the circuit is then complete. By pulling the welding wire back from the surface ever so slightly, an arc of electricity is produced, creating a great amount of heat.
