The MLB season is around six weeks old up to this point, so we have a little bit of the groundwork to determine which teams can make the playoffs and which teams will miss the postseason. Remember that this is the first season that the playoff format changed, and there will be three wild card teams in each league that make the postseason, so that will change how the future playoff bets will go.
If you want to feel more in the day-to-day grind of the sport than betting on the season in its entirety, take a look at the point spread for each game to get very favorable odds. All of the odds provided in this article are courtesy of DraftKings, so depending on when you bet and which sportsbook you choose, the odds can differ a little bit.
Toronto Blue Jays to Miss Playoffs (+450)
The Toronto Blue Jays were praised by all baseball pundits as they were considered to be the favorites to win the American League pennant, let alone make the playoffs. However, their pitching staff is not as good as people want to believe as Alek Manoah and Kevin Gausman are good pitchers, but I do not fully believe in the starting pitchers of Jose Berrios, Hyun Jin Ryu, and Yusei Kikuchi. The offense can struggle at times in a loaded AL East with the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and the Boston Red Sox.
Another major factor is the travel restrictions for the Toronto Blue Jays. When the team has a road trip and is heading up to Toronto, they cannot fly into Toronto as they would need to quarantine. A loophole is the ability to travel to Buffalo, New York, and then a bus from there through customs, and that is an additional three hours of traveling they need to do. That is going to take a lot out of a team that is not factored into wins and losses here. The Blue Jays are a good team, but I do not see them winning the AL East and struggling to make the AL Wild Card.
Minnesota Twins to Make Playoffs (+100)
The Minnesota Twins have been doing well this season as they are 22-16 as of this writing, which is three games ahead in the AL Central. That is, without shortstop Carlos Correa dealing with injuries and center fielder Byron Buxton adjusting to scheduled rest days to keep him fresh and healthy for the entire regular season. I don’t love their starting pitching as their rotation looks to be Chris Archer, Joe Ryan, Dylan Bundy, Sonny Gray, and Bailey Ober, as Chris Paddack will need Tommy John Surgery and miss the remainder of this season.
However, this lineup can produce and has a bunch of players that need to play to the back of their baseball cards, as Buxton, Correa, Gary Sanchez, Max Kepler, and Jorge Polanco can be a formidable chunk of the lineup that can produce a lot of power. Their defense is doing decently well and can hit their way to some wins in this not completely competitive AL Central division. They should be able to pick up wins against teams like the Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals and feast off teams under .500 Minnesota is an outstanding 9-3 against the AL and NL Central divisions so far, and that is going to carry them to a divisional win and keep them winning. All in all, go with the Minnesota Twins to make the playoffs.
The MLB Playoffs seem like a long time away as we are just in the middle of May and still have over 120 games left to play. However, we have a bit of a foundation, and these two bets should be one of the best and gives you some incredible value. What MLB Playoff prop bets should we be making at this point of the regular season?
